Scouting Montini boys basketball

Montini

Coach: Brian Opoka.

Last year: 6-18, 1-9, fifth in the Suburban Christian Conference Blue Division; lost 67-54 to Little Village in a Class 3A Marshall regional quarterfinal.

Top players: Rich Bodee, sr., F; Ben Brady, sr., G; Matt Brachmann, so., C; Dan Burke, sr., F; Jon Gibbs, sr., G; Logan Goss, jr., G; TyShawn Johnson, sr., G; Jim Miller, sr., G.

Scouting report: Seniors have sadly been in extremely short supply in Opoka’s tenure, so the presence of three-year starters Bodee, Miller, Brady and Burke lifts the coach’s spirits and proves their dedication. The Broncos’ move to the SCC Gold Division also could result in a few more wins. The 6-foot-3 Bodee averaged 12 points as a junior, followed by Miller at 7.4 and Johnson at 7.3. Brachmann, a 215-pound football tight end, may lend needed defensive strength in the lane. Again, due to a long football playoff run Montini will not play in a Thanksgiving tournament. A fast squad, Montini pleasantly surprised Opoka by going over .500 in summer play. That success, plus finally some experience, could foreshadow improvement. “I think we’ve grown up a lot through the last three years,” Opoka said.
