NW Symphony opens 60th season Nov. 20
Submitted by the Northwest Symphony Orchestra
The award-winning Northwest Symphony Orchestra will present the first concert in its gala 60th anniversary season at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 20, in the Theatre for the Performing Arts at Maine West High School, 1755 S. Wolf Road in Des Plaines.
Highlighting this special season will be repeat performances of music played at the orchestra’s inaugural concert on May 3, 1953 and also for its 50th anniversary.
Music Director and Conductor Paul Vermel will open the concert with Aaron Copland’s “Ceremonial Fanfare,” followed by a reprise of Daniel Steven Craft’s “Entrance into the City of Proud Fancy,” whose 2002 world premiere celebrated the NSO’s golden anniversary. The orchestra will continue with selections from the L’Arlisienne Suites I and II by Georges Bizet, music played at its inaugural concert.
The program’s featured soloist will be pianist Mio Nakamura, who will perform Tchaikovsky’s popular Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat minor.
The NSO will continue its preconcert commentaries by Carolyn Paulin, a producer and program host at radio station WFMT 98.7 Chicago. Her commentaries begin one hour prior to the concert.
Members of the Northwest Symphony Orchestra represent a wide spectrum of interests and backgrounds, including financial analysts, real estate agents, engineers, physicians, music performers and educators, as well as both students and retirees.
The orchestra, founded in 1951, now numbers 70 instrumentalists, ranging from talented students to music professionals, who meet weekly to play and enjoy great symphonic orchestral music. Symphony members, whose ages range from the late teens to the 80s, live in Des Plaines and more than 45 surrounding communities.
Tickets are $20; with $15 for seniors and $10 for students. Season tickets for the four-concert series are $60; $45 for seniors and $30 for students. Children under 14 are free when accompanied by a paying adult.
