Detweiler’s in the moment for Grayslake North

Grayslake North’s girls basketball roster mistakenly lists Kendall Detweiler as a freshman.

She’s clearly not.

In her second varsity season, the 5-foot-3 sophomore is a different — and better — player.

She showed that Tuesday night at Mundelein, scoring a career-high 28 points in Grayslake North’s 54-50 loss to Glenbrook North.

“It helped me a lot,” Detweiler said of her full season on varsity as a freshman. “All the confidence that I built up from last year has just helped me come to play this year.”

Her confidence got a jolt at the end of last season when she advanced downstate in the three-point shooting contest and tied for second.

Against Glenbrook North (1-0), Detweiler sank six 3-pointers. She also had 4 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 assists.

“When you’re second in the state in the three-point contest, you should be expected the next year to be able to shoot the ball,” Grayslake North coach Jim Sarver said. “But besides shooting it, she also did a nice job of handling herself out on the court. She played 32 minutes (Monday) night, and she played (almost) 32 minutes again tonight.”

Detweiler’s 10 points, including a pair of 3s, had the Knights up 15-7 after one quarter. Grayslake North (0-2) still led 22-20 at halftime.

But the Spartans took control in the third quarter and built a 40-36 lead entering the fourth. Detweiler’s 8 points, including two more 3-pointers, kept the Knights close.

“I was just ‘on’ with my 3s,” Detweiler said.

It was the second tough loss in as many nights for the Knights, who lost to Mundelein 44-43 Monday.

Joanna Guhl had a double-double of 13 points and 15 rebounds for Grayslake North.

“We’re doing good things,” Detweiler said. “I think (the close games) will help us and we’ll do better later in the season — hopefully Thursday (against Highland Park), too. We just got to get rid of those little mistakes.”

Gracie Sanchez had 18 points and 11 rebounds for Glenbrook North. Alena Marovitz added 8 points and 9 rebounds for the Spartans.
