Warren Wave is successful at tourney
Submitted by John X. Rossi
The annual Witches and Fast Pitches tournament in Salem, Wis., was spookily cold. Battling freezing temperatures, the fifth seed fall ball Warren Wave 12U Blue made some magic of their own, fighting off a tough Bordertown Bandits Black team 5-4 in the championship game, winning their fourth game in a row and becoming the tournament champions.
The Wave’s defense kept them in the lead including a terrific catch in the sixth by center fielder Kayla Nommensen on a dead run to take away an extra base hit. In the seventh inning, the Bandits’ cleanup hitter tried to tie the game by stretching a triple, but was thrown out at the plate with catcher Rachel Becker applying the tag for the thrilling final out of the game.
“This team improved throughout the fall season and in this tournament we executed perfectly in every phase of the game: pitching, hitting, running, defense and most importantly, a winning attitude. There were no individuals and no quitters on this team. I am very proud of the girls,” manager Travis Hudgins said.
Congratulations go to players Emily Hudgins, Rachel Becker, Sarah Finkel, Devon Plata, Hannah Nommensen, Erika Jimenez, Kelly Beck, Kinsey Jasnoch, Kayla Nommensen and Zoe Belletini.
