Police: Elgin man stabbed over cellphone

A 31-year-old man is charged with attempted murder after police said he stabbed an Elgin man over a cellphone last week.

Marcellus D. Thomas, of the 100 block of Kimball Street, Elgin, turned himself into Elgin police late Sunday night, authorities said.

Thomas has been wanted on a warrant after being charged with attempted murder, armed robbery, armed violence and two counts of aggravated assault, court records show.

His bail was set at $750,000, meaning he needs to post $75,000 to be released pending trial.

Elgin Police spokeswoman Sue Olafson said authorities were called to the 100 block of South State Street at about 7 a.m. Nov. 6 for a report of a stabbing.

Olafson said a 37-year-old Elgin man told police he’d been drinking beer with a man he had just met in a nearby apartment. When the man went to leave the apartment, Thomas demanded the man’s cellphone, punched him and pulled a large kitchen knife and stabbed him once on the chest, Olafson said.

The victim underwent surgery at Provena St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin, Olafson said. The victim was later able to pick Thomas out of a photo lineup and Thomas’ girlfriend also witnessed the attack, Olafson said.

Thomas is due in court Nov. 22.

The most serious charges carry a 6- to 30-year prison term with no possibility of probation.
