Buses now allowed to ride on highway shoulder
CHICAGO — The Bus on Shoulder program is under way for some commuters who take public transit into Chicago.
The program is designed to speed the trip for people who take buses that run on the Stevenson Expressway from the suburbs to the city.
Under the plan that started Monday, bus drivers will be allowed to use the newly widened shoulders on the Stevenson to get around rush-hour traffic jams.
The program is funded by a $1.5 million federal grant for projects that improve air quality.
Officials hope it will improve the commute for people who ride Pace routes 755 and 855. Route 755 operates between Plainfield and Bolingbrook and the medical district on Chicago's West Side. Route 855 serves Plainfield, Romeoville, Bolingbrook, Burr Ridge and the Loop.
