BG police warn of ‘ruse’ burglaries

Buffalo Grove police are warning homeowners to be on guard, after two “ruse burglaries” in the past two weeks — where one conspirator distracts a homeowner as a second person enters the home and looks for things to steal.

On Nov. 9, a Marquette Place resident said a Hispanic man told the resident he was doing tree trimming and needed to check the property line. The subject was using either a cellphone or walkie talkie in the home, and after he left the resident discovered jewelry missing. The subject fled in a silver van or SUV.

On Oct. 27, a male Hispanic subject gained entry to a home on Willow Parkway by claiming he would be doing plumbing work and needed to check the water pressure. When the resident got suspicious and threatened to call police, the man quickly left, apparently taking some jewelry with him.

The suspect in the Nov. 9 burglary was a younger looking male Hispanic, 5-7, with black hair, wearing a dark blue wool jacket (similar to a Navy Pea coat) blue baseball cap, and gloves.

The suspect in the Oct. 27 burglary was a younger male Hispanic, 5-7 with a thin build, wearing black or blue navy blue pants with a white stripe, blue jacket and gloves.

Police officials remind residents not to allow strangers access to their yard, home or garage, and call 911 to report suspicious people asking for access. Residents should also be aware of occupied vehicles parked in residential neighborhoods.
