New sentence for wrongfully convicted Wis. man

MADISON, Wis. — A Madison man who spent six years in prison for a sexual assault he didn’t commit is heading back to prison.

Forest Shomberg was convicted of being a felon in possession of a firearm. He was sentenced Thursday to one year in federal prison.

A Wisconsin State Journal report says the 47-year-old faced up to 6 1/2 years but the judge said she granted lenience because of his previous wrongful conviction.

Shomberg had been accused of groping a college student in 2002 even though friends said he was several blocks away at the time. DNA evidence exonerated him.

Although that conviction was tossed, his attorney says Shomberg had prior felony convictions prohibiting him from having a gun.

Shomberg told the judge he intended to use the gun to kill himself.
