Study: Springfield post office cuts mean $32M loss
SPRINGFIELD — A new study finds that the loss of 300 postal service jobs would take nearly $32 million out of Springfield's economy every year.
The State Journal-Register (http://bit.ly/tWC6A3) reports the Northern Illinois University analysis is part of a lobbying effort by the Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce, city and local postal workers union. The goal is to stop possible relocation of a postal station to St. Louis.
The report found an additional 145 indirect jobs would be lost if the postal station moves. Those jobs would be in the service industry. It would cost $1.7 million in income tax losses and $102,000 in local sales tax losses.
A U.S. Postal Service spokeswoman says the report will be taken into account if it is submitted during public hearings.
