Can’t TV be more creative, less vulgar?
I applaud the letter in the Oct. 27 edition from Charles Falk: “Televised vulgarity debases society.” I am increasingly disgusted with television programs. In comedy there seems to be no subject other than personal humiliation, sex or body functions in which to find humor. Are all the writers that immature? In drama it must have sex as well as repulsive scenes of gore, blood and guts. Reality shows feature people fighting or humiliating each other. A good plot just doesn’t seem to matter. Even commercials have become degrading — giving someone a “wedgie” over and over? Small babies filling their disposable diapers in competition? Parents deciding which child to love the most?
Must “entertainment” degrade family members or human values? My biggest fear is that our society is becoming used to this, becoming numb to this garbage. It’s depressing to know that people watch these things on a regular basis. I watch sports, news and public television. There’s little if anything else of merit.
Somewhere out there, there must be some creative minds who can write about the funny things in everyday life like so many of the earlier comedies did. Honest, there are more things going on in our lives than sex and bathroom functions. Think about it. And, please, write about it.
