Village expenditures hard to fathom

Over the last four years, the property values in Wheeling have dropped between 20 percent and 30 percent while over that same period the village of Wheeling has raised their tax rate every year.

I am now paying 49 percent more than I did four years ago to the village and I am sure I’m not the only one. Now they want to raise their tax rate again.

I read in the Daily Herald that one of the reasons the village needs more money is to pay off the bonds on all of the new facilities they built over the last couple of years. One has to ask why the village spent over $10 million on a village hall bigger than Chicago, a new fire department less than one mile from the old one, a new public works facility that could house four suburban maintenance crews and the remodeling of the police department despite being in the worst recession in 60 years and 9 percent unemployment.
