<h3 class="briefHead">Metra train service to Elgin expected to resume this morning</h3>
Metra service is expected to resume to Elgin this morning after a Canadian National freight train careened off the rails near Gifford and Spaulding roads at the Elgin-Bartlett border. Only one track may be clear, however, so trains likely will be delayed 20 to 30 minutes, Metra said last night. Commuters are advised to check metra.com for service updates. Canadian National doesn't know yet what caused the derailment, focusing instead on getting the scene cleared, it said yesterday. Full story.
<h3 class="briefHead">Lake Zurich Dist. 95 kills drug-testing proposal</h3>
Bowing to overwhelming community opposition, Lake Zurich Unit District 95 board members last night essentially scuttled a controversial plan for random drug testing at the high school. The final straw was a community survey that showed 76 percent of District 95 parents are against the plan, matching the opposition at an October public hearing. Board President Kathy Brown and her colleagues agreed the issue was dead. "The board's not interested in pushing an issue people aren't interested in," she said. But the board will still take a formal vote Nov. 17. Full story.
<h3 class="briefHead">Trial involving toddler's death at Lincolnshire day care continues</h3>
The trial of Melissa Calusinski for first-degree murder in the death of 16-month-old Benjamin Kingan continues today in Lake County. A police officer yesterday testified Calusinski said there was nothing unusual about Kingan's behavior the day he fell ill while under her supervision at a day-care center in Lincolnshire. <h3 class="briefHead">Des Plaines man in federal custody on child porn charges</h3>
A 32-year-old Des Plaines man is in federal custody and has a detention hearing today after a raid of his home Tuesday led to him being charged with transporting child pornography. Bobby Cruz was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, who uncovered correspondence between Cruz and an unnamed suspect in California who was arrested in April on similar charges, according to court papers. Investigators used that man's email address to offer to trade porn with Cruz, who then sent more than 100 images, according to the records. Full story.
<h3 class="briefHead">St. Charles teen linked to Munhall School robbery, police say</h3>
Police have apprehended a St. Charles teen they said was trying to leave the state and who they believe is involved with a recent strong-armed robbery at Munhall Elementary School in St. Charles. Robert A. Pruett, 18, of the 1100 block of Motz Street, was arrested Oct. 26 by the North Central Narcotics Task Force as he fled east on Interstate 294 at Interstate 80, police said yesterday. At the time, he was wanted on charges of forgery for a check police said he presented Oct. 26 at West Suburban Bank in St. Charles. The investigation continues to identify other individuals involved with the Munhall robbery. Full story.
<h3 class="briefHead">One case of West Nile virus found in Kane County</h3>
A St. Charles woman became ill with West Nile virus in September, making Kane County one of only 10 Illinois counties to experience a human case of the virus this year. The 63-year-old reported feeling ill about mid-September, did not require hospitalization and recovered fully, according to the Kane County Health Department. Full story.
<h3 class="briefHead">Charges expected in stabbing death of Indian Head Park girl</h3>
ABC 7 Chicago reported last night a 38-year-old Chicago man is expected to face charges in the stabbing death of 14-year-old Kelli O'Laughlin of Indian Head Park. Police say she surprised a burglar when she got home from school one week ago. The state's attorney's office is now reviewing the evidence against a suspect. "We feel very confident about the case and about the individual that's in custody right now," Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart said during a news conference late last night. Full story.

<h3 class="briefHead">Patrick Kane looks like he's for real after Hawks win</h3>
Patrick Kane was a difference-maker again Thursday night with a spectacular assist in regulation and the deciding goal in the shootout in the Blackhawks' 3-2 win last night over the Florida Panthers. Kane was the only one of six shooters to score in the shootout, beating Panthers goalie Jacob Markstrom with a backhander through the legs. Kane said at training camp he wanted to take his game to the next level and be one of the NHL's elite players. Boy, he wasn't kidding. Tim Sassone reports.
<h3 class="briefHead">Epstein and Hoyer to start interviewing for manager today</h3>
Cubs President Theo Epstein and GM Jed Hoyer said yesterday they'll interview Phillies bench coach Pete Mackanin today. The Cubs also have permission to speak with Texas Rangers pitching coach Mike Maddux, and that meeting may take place next week. Other names are definitely in the mix, including former Red Sox manager Terry Francona and Milwaukee Brewers hitting coach Dale Sveum. That we even know these names is a break from the past Cubs management. Bruce Miles reports.

A handful of high schools are on the verge of earning a spot in the girls volleyball Final Four. Earning sectional championships last night were Benet, St. Charles East, Stevenson and Cary-Grove in Class 4A, Carmel and St. Francis in Class 3A, Timothy Christian in Class 2A and, in the school's first year in existence, Harvest Christian Academy in Class 1A.
