St. Hubert students ‘Make a Difference’

In what has become a “Make A Difference Day” tradition for St. Hubert Catholic School in Hoffman Estates, the 500 students, their teachers and staff members collected over 3,000 food items that were delivered to the Schaumburg Township Food Pantry Oct. 21.

Spearheaded by the St. Hubert Student Council, the project involved students, ages preschool through eighth grade, to go on a “scavenger hunt” in their neighborhood to collect food for the food pantry. Each grade was asked to contribute certain items to ensure that the specific needs of the food pantry were met.

On Oct. 21, fifth-graders and members of Student Council loaded all the items, which were then personally delivered to the food pantry.

“The students chose this project because throughout the month of October as a school we have had many discussions on how lucky we are to have food on our table and that there are families and children that are hungry,” explained Lindsey LeBeau, a fifth-grade teacher at St. Hubert and faculty adviser to Student Council. “The students really developed a deep concern for this. Their faces were beaming as they loaded the cars and truly experienced how wonderful it is to give something so important to someone in need.”

From The Schaumburg Township Food Pantry: “The Schaumburg Township Food Pantry is extremely grateful to Saint Hubert Catholic School faculty and students for the vast amount of food collected as a part of their Make a Difference project. Through their kindness and generosity, we are able to keep our pantry shelves well stocked with a variety of foods throughout the fall season.

“The current economy has impacted the need for food in our community. The Schaumburg Township Food Pantry helps an average of 475 to 500 households monthly. That is a 35 percent increase in pantry usage from this time last year. Thanks to the generous support from our community residents, businesses, organizations and schools, we are able to keep up with the increased need for food in our very own neighborhood to help fight hunger.”
