Kane soccer club sued after player’s injury
A Campton Hills man is suing the Fox Valley Strikers Soccer Club, saying the club left a movable soccer goal too close to a field, causing it to fall and knock out his teenage son’s teeth after he tripped on the netting.
James Newman seeks more than $50,000 damages for the Jan. 7, 2011, incident in which Daniel Newman was injured, according the lawsuit recently filed in Kane County.
The suit states that the younger Newman was playing at an indoor field at 1000 S. Kirk Road, Geneva, and running along the sideline when he tripped on the netting of a movable goal that “was too close to the field and where it posed a danger” to players.
Jeffrey Deutschman, attorney for the Newmans, said the impact knocked out all of the teen’s front teeth.
“They don’t seem to care about the health and safety of the kids that are playing,” Deutschman said, adding that the younger Newman no longer plays for the club. “These people are running a terrible facility out there at the club and this lawsuit’s going to bring that out.”
The suit did not specify how large or heavy the goal was or what its materials consisted of. The Geneva Fire Department, in responding to a Freedom of Information Act Request, said it was not called to that address on Jan. 7 for any injuries to a player.
Robin Munoz, spokeswoman for the club, said the club had no comment on the suit.
Both sides are due in court Jan. 5.
