Rev up the coverage of auto racing
I’ve been a resident of Palatine close to 70 years. When I was young, my dad (who was a race car driver in his younger days) would take me to all the local and some not-so-local tracks, such as Soldier Field, O’Hare Stadium, Raceway Park, Santa Fe Speedway and of course Milwaukee, Indy and Springfield. During the 1940s, ’50s and ’60s the Midwest was the center of the best racing in the country.
In the 1950s, I went to a race with my dad at Soldier Field. During one of the races a car lost a wheel. It went into the stands and killed a young fan. From that time until now all the newspapers in the Chicago area have stopped offering quality racing news. You will see nothing but bits and pieces. If someone gets killed it makes the front page.
I’m a die-hard racing fan. I think it’s high time we get some quality news reporting on racing, not just obituaries of skilled competitors.
