Immaculate Conception falls 30-29

Immaculate Conception won the turnover battle but lost the game.

In Saturday's Class 3A first-round game at Winnebago, the No. 6 seed Knights lost 30-29 despite 5 Winnebago turnovers. IC (6-4) turned the ball over 4 times.

"We didn't capitalize," said the Knights' Chris VanDyke, whose first season as a head coach come to an end.

Immaculate Conception led 21-14 at halftime and was up 29-22 before Winnebago (8-2) marched 80 yards to score, then added the 2-point conversion. Winnebago secured the win with an interception in the last three minutes.

IC quarterback Demetrius Carr threw a pair of touchdown passes, both to sophomore Sam Rose. Knights senior tailback Dan Vatch ran for 2 touchdowns.

Winnebago advances to a second-round game against No. 2 Beardstown, a 28-27 winner over Georgetown-Ridge Farm.
