Former Illini basketball star Jereme Richmond has been released from Lake County Jail after posting an extra $500 bond. The former Waukegan High School star has been held in Lake County Jail after testing positive for marijuana while out on bond. After the failed test last week, his bail was increased to $70,000, of which 10 percent must be posted. He already had a $6,500 credit from the previous bond posting. He is accused of beating and threatening a Waukegan woman police say he dated.

<h3 class="briefHead">Photos show man robbing Winthrop Harbor store</h3>

Winthrop Harbor police yesterday released surveillance photos from an armed robbery inside a cigarette store that show a robber Tuesday pointing a gun at the store clerk who is on the ground. The suspect robbed the Smoke 4 Less, 545 Sheridan Road, of about $925, according to police. He was described as a black man in his 20s about 6 feet tall wearing a black and white hooded jacket with a large spider logo on the front. Full story.

<h3 class="briefHead">Winthrop Harbor soldier dies in Saudi Arabia</h3>

U.S. military officials continue to investigate the death of a 28-year-old Winthrop Harbor soldier who died Tuesday in Saudi Arabia in a noncombative situation. Sgt. 1st Class David G. Robinson, a father of two, was in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, supporting Operation New Dawn, the U.S.'s Iraqi rebuilding effort, according to his family. No further details of what he was doing were available other than that he was supporting a unit of five to seven service members in the kingdom's largest city. "It's still under investigation," his father said. "His death, it's the first death in Riyadh." Full story.

<h3 class="briefHead">Des Plaines woman sentenced in horse cruelty case</h3>

A Des Plaines woman convicted of neglect and animal cruelty to five horses was sentenced to two years probation, and she could also get 60 days in jail, but only if she fails to care for her animals while on probation. "These horses were in dire straits. They were in trouble," said Judge Charles Weech. "I want to prevent this from ever occurring again." The 37-year-old Jamie Koy was arrested in the fall of 2010 after authorities found 14 malnourished horses in Crystal Lake. Full story.

<h3 class="briefHead">16-year-old injuries in Elgin hit-and-run</h3>

Elgin police are investigating a hit-and-run accident that injured a 16-year-old girl who was on her way to high school Tuesday morning. Danielle Bussard was crossing the street near the Chicago Street bus station in downtown Elgin when she was struck by a vehicle. "Whoever was driving the car stopped and hesitated," her father said yesterday. "And then they took off." She was struck at about 6:45 a.m. and is now on crutches from a variety of non-life-threatening, but serious injuries. Full story.

<h3 class="briefHead">Wauconda man sentenced to 9 years in Ponzi scheme</h3>

A Wauconda man who pleaded guilty to running a Ponzi scheme that defrauded 40 investors of more than $2 million was sentenced yesterday to nine years in prison. Paul Joseph Cirigliano, who ran Panoptic Studios out of Wauconda, told investors the company purchased analog video recording equipment to resell it to companies in the U.S. and South America who still used the outdated technology. He used those investments to pay personal and business expenses and repay earlier investors. Full story.

<h3 class="briefHead">Naperville Central gymnast grabs 3rd gold in Pan Am games</h3>

A Naperville Central gymnast earned her third gold medal on Day 13 of the Pan American Games. Bridgette Caquatto, 17, won goal in the uneven bars yesterday after taking home the all-around gold and helping the team with another title in Guadalajara, Mexico. "I just wanted to go out there and do the same bar routine I did the other two days and end the meet off on a great note. I didn't care where I placed, but I'm happy with where things ended up." People should avoid I-94 at Niles Center Road due to a crash blocking two left inbound lanes, and Washington Street near Cedar Lane in Round Lake because of another crash. People should also avoid paving operations at South Springsguth Road between Winthrop Lane and Hartmann Drive in Schaumburg, and construction in both directions between Shales Parkway and Weld Road in Elgin. After Chris Harris' solid start at safety, it looks like Chris Conte will be the Bears' long-term solution at the position in the wake of Harris' release from the team yesterday. Harris, a seven-year veteran who was a second-team All-Pro pick last season, started all 16 games and was tied for the team lead with 5 interceptions. "Chris Conte, we moved him into the starting lineup a couple weeks ago, (and we've) been very pleased with what we've gotten from him as a tackler, a guy in the middle of the field with a lot of range," coach Lovie Smith said. <h3 class="briefHead">What a World Series game; another instant classic tonight?</h3>

Two times, in the 9th inning and 10th inning, the Texas Rangers were within a strike of winning the World Series, and both times, the St. Louis Cardinals tied it up. Finally, in the 11th, the Rangers didn't score and the Cardinals did when David Freese hit a home run to win the game. It made everyone forget the game was a mess early on. Full story.
