UW-Oshkosh scoreboard operator retires at age 89
OSHKOSH, Wis. — A distinguished World War II veteran who has run the football scoreboard at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh for 41 years is ready to retire.
With his 90th birthday coming up next month, Ben Zalas decided this will be his final season. He jokes that it's time to turn the job over to a younger man, possibly someone in his 70s or 80s.
Zalas started operating the scoreboard back in 1970. He says it's been a fun way to meet wonderful people and watch great college football.
He says it's been a good run. He predicts he'll feel “a little sentimental” when the clock ticks off the last seconds of the season's final home game.
Zalas earned the Bronze Star and Purple Heart during World War II action in Italy.
