Onalaska native injured in Wall Street protest
ONALASKA, Wis. — An Iraqi war veteran from western Wisconsin is critically injured when police clashed with anti-Wall Street protesters in Oakland, Calif.
Twenty-four-year-old Scott Olsen suffered a cracked skull in the chaos late Tuesday night. Olsen graduated from Onalaska High School in 2005 and joined the Marines.
Olsen's uncle, George Nygaard (NEYE'-gard), tells the La Crosse Tribune it's ironic that his nephew served two tours of duty in Iraq without an injury, then comes back to the U.S. and injured in the clash with police.
It was not clear exactly what type of object hit Olsen or who might have thrown it, though the group Iraq Veterans Against the War said it was lodged by officers. Oakland's police chief promises a thorough investigation.
Olsen is in critical condition at Highland Hospital in Oakland.
