ComEd’s plan at a glance

The Senate Tuesday approved legislation that changes ComEd’s proposal to raise electric rates and invest money in new grid technologies. Here’s a quick look at the overall proposal.

What ComEd would do: Upgrade with new ‘Smart Grid’ technologies that make it easier to track energy uses, among other things.

Cost: About $3 a month to the average customer.

Who’s for it? People who think the electric grid needs to be upgraded for the increased demand of today’s gadgets and even electric cars.

Who’s against it? People who say ComEd is doing too much to change Illinois’ regulatory system and get nearly guaranteed rate hikes.

Where does it stand? Gov. Pat Quinn vetoed the plan. Now, lawmakers are working on tweaks that could lead to an override. If lawmakers override Quinn, the proposal becomes law.
