Fish fry benefits Dundee environmental center
Submitted by Schweitzer Environmental Center
A fish fry fundraiser to benefit the Schweitzer Environmental Center will be from 3 to 10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28, at Bandito Barney’s, 10 N. River St. in East Dundee. Tickets are $15 ($20 at the door) and include a fish dinner, two drinks and live musical entertainment.
Funds raised will be used to pay for utilities and insurance, and to continue the reconstruction work at the center in the Schweitzer Woods Forest Preserve on Sleepy Hollow Road, just north of Route 72.
Once the stately home of championship dog breeder Emily Schweitzer, the building that will house the center was slated for demolition until a few groups of concerned citizens joined forces to save it.
In 2008, the Kane County Forest Preserve agreed to lease the house to Friends of the Fox River, Community Unit District 300 and the Citizens’ Advocate Team for use as an environmental education center on the condition that these groups fund the venture.
Since then, an active group of volunteers, including several classes of District 300 students, has been working to renovate the house. The ultimate goal is to provide area students with an interactive facility that provides environmental programs and opportunities to take action in support of our environment. Grand opening of the center is slated for June 9, 2012.
For tickets, call Gary Swick at (815) 370-0026. If you cannot attend the event but would like to donate to the cause, checks can be made to the Citizens’ Advocate Team and mailed to P.O. Box 921, West Dundee, IL 60118.
