Bartlett coalition recognizes ‘People of the Pillars’

The Bartlett Character Counts! Coalition recognized three individuals as “People of the Pillars” during Character Counts! Week.

This annual award honors Bartlett residents who best exemplify the Six Pillars of Character, which are: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship.

A member of the Bartlett Woman’s Club nominated Velma Gruenwald for the award. Gruenwald showed great responsibility by raising her sister’s five children after their mother died. She has cared for children in her church over the years through Sunday school and vacation Bible school.

As a crossing guard for 10 years and a member of the Hanover Township Mental Health Board, Gruenwald has demonstrated citizenship.

Finally, she showed her respect for fellow cancer survivors by participating in the Relay For Life.

A member of the Bartlett Park District nominated Kim and John Boske for the award. The Boskes have shown their respect for the community over the years by helping to keep it clean. Each weekend they walk from their house to the bike path along South Bartlett Road with gloves, a trash picker stick and trash bag to remove the refuse from the path.

The coalition presented these awards at the “Letters of the Civil War” program at the Log Cabin Sunday, Oct. 16.
