29-year-old Schaumburg man dies while setting up to DJ wedding
A 29-year-old Schaumburg man died Saturday while setting up to DJ a wedding. Brett Anderson, who was also a bartender in Hoffman Estates, was pronounced dead at the Chicago Marriott in Schaumburg after collapsing at around 4 p.m. The medical examiner's office is awaiting toxicology results. His mother said he had a minor fever a few days before he collapsed, but nothing anyone thought was life-threatening. “He thrived on being with people,” said his longtime girlfriend, Dana Alcorn. “He always wanted to make people laugh or perform for them.” Full story.
Newborn girl abandoned in Schaumburg church parking lot
Members of a Schaumburg church returning to their car yesterday afternoon found an abandoned newborn baby in a bag with a teddy bear and a towel, according to police. The baby girl, who is in good health, is thought to be a few days old. The Asian girl weighs 7 pounds and does not appear to have been born in a hospital. The girl was found at the Gospel Presbyterian Church and was taken to a hospital for evaluation. Full story.
Libertyville H.S. volleyball players injured when bus flips
The driver of a school bust that flipped on its side Saturday, injuring several members of the Libertyville High School volleyball team, has been cited for failing to yield while making a left turn. Jorge Tamayo of Chicago collided with a pickup truck at Route 83 and Washington Street in Grayslake, causing the bus to flip. Eleven of the students were taken to area hospitals for what paramedics described as minor injuries. Most, members of the school's volleyball team, suffered cuts and bruises, Grayslake Battalion Chief Jon Cokefair said. Full story.
Runners, cyclists raise funds for wounded veterans
Runners and cyclists yesterday participated in the first Barrington Honor Ride and Run to raise funds and awareness for wounded veterans. Hundreds of people participated in the 30-mile bike ride, or a 10K or 5K run, sponsored by UnitedHealthcare. Proceeds went to two organizations, the Ride 2 Recovery and Operation Homefront, both of which are dedicated to helping wounded vets. Full story.
Defense, Forte rule in Bears victory
What started off as a dominant performance for the Bears in London yesterday turned into a nailbiter as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers clawed back to within 6 points before D.J. Moore picked off a pass on the Bears 25-yard line with about 30 seconds left in the game. The Bears led 21-5 after the first half and improved their record to 4-3 with the win at London's historic Wembley Stadium. The Bears defense grabbed four interceptions and Matt Forte ran for 145 yards. Full story.
Deadly earthquake rattles Turkey
The death toll in Turkey where at least 200 people died in the wake of a 7.2 magnitude earthquake is expected to continue to rise today, possibly substantially, according to the Turkish Red Crescent. Some buildings collapsed and highways caved in, injuring hundreds more. “There are many people under the rubble,” Veysel Keser, the mayor of the district of Celebibag, told NTV. “People are in agony. We can hear their screams for help.” Residents lit campfires last night and planned to sleep outdoors, while rescue crews began setting up tents in a stadium. Full story.
Insurance won't cover Joplin tornado survivor's massive hospital bills
A 51-year-old man who was in a coma for two months after the Joplin, Mo., tornado now faces medical expenses that exceed $2.5 million, but has no medical insurance. He assumed workers' compensation as a social worker would cover his bills because he was attempting to save three developmentally disabled adults from the tornado when he was thrown nearly a block by the 200 mph winds. His claim was denied “based on the fact that there was no greater risk than the general public at the time you were involved in the Joplin tornado,” according to a letter from the insurance company.
