Village promotes recycling options as electronics landfill ban starts Jan. 1

LOMBARD, Illinois—A statewide electronics landfill ban will go into effect January 1, 2012. This means that with the start of the new year, electronic items will not be able to be disposed as trash. Rather, they must be recycled by a registered collector, recycler and/or manufacturer.

The following electronic items are included in the ban: computers, monitors, printers, laptops, televisions, keyboards, fax machines, recorders, mp3 players, video consoles, DVD players, computer mouse, scanners, digital converter box, cable receivers, satellite receivers, DVRs or small-scale servers.

The chair of the Lombard's Environmental Concerns Committee, Trustee Laura Fitzpatrick, states that "it is important that all residents understand the reasoning behind the law and do their very best to comply. The village of Lombard, along with private recycling partners hope to arrange convenient ways to help dispose of that waste." As such, the Village is planning to again host its annual Recycling Extravaganza in September 2012. The Village is also planning to add a monthly recycling collection starting in the Spring of 2012. More information will be made available as that time nears.

DuPage County is launching an educational effort on the electronics landfill ban and has informational brochures available to the public. Hard copies of the brochure are available at the Lombard Village Hall or for more information, visit www.dupageco.org/recycling.
