Imprisoned Naperville man has life sentence waiting in Texas

A former Naperville man currently incarcerated in Illinois will spend the rest of his life behind bars in Texas if he is ever released from an Illinois prison.

Stephen D. Silvey, 50, is spending 57 years in prison in Illinois after he was charged and pleaded guilty to predatory criminal sexual assault of a child, aggravated criminal abuse and possession of child pornography after repeatedly sexually assaulting a Naperville child since she was 7 years old.

Now, investigators from Naperville helped police in Plano, Texas, crack a second case against Silvey, and he was found guilty of similar charges there this week, said Sgt. Gregg Bell of the Naperville Police Department.

According to Bell, in March of 2007 a 16-year-old female victim reported that she had been repeatedly sexually assaulted by Silvey since she was 7, with all of the assaults taking place in Naperville.

After a thorough investigation, Bell said, Silvey was arrested on March 10, 2007, and several computers were confiscated, yielding tens of thousands of images of child pornography.

Silvey pleaded guilty to the crimes against him on June 17, 2008, and was sentenced to 57 years in prison, Bell said. However, during the course of the Naperville investigation, police learned of a second victim who was currently residing in Plano, Bell said.

Investigator Erin Gibler of the Naperville Police Department and Investigator Beth Chaney of the Plano Police Department worked together to bring similar charges against Silvey in Texas for abusing a child since that victim was also 7 years old, Bell said.

Both families said the offender was allegedly a “friend” of theirs via past relationships, Bell said.

Silvey was given a life sentence in Texas on Oct. 18 based on evidence presented during the trial by Gibler and Computer Forensic Specialist Chris Berard.

Silvey remains in Texas for now due to the trial, Bell said, but will return to Illinois shortly to serve his 57-year sentence. Then, at the end of the his Illinois sentence, Silvey will be transferred back to Texas to complete his life sentence there, Bell said.
