Dismemberment convict sentenced for prison death

PERU, Ind. — A man in prison for killing his ex-girlfriend and scattering her dismembered remains across three southern Indiana counties has pleaded guilty to the strangulation death of his cellmate.

A Miami County judge on Thursday sentenced 56-year-old Joseph Brown to 60 years in prison in addition to his life sentence for killing Ginger Gasaway of Evansville in 2000.

The additional murder sentence against Brown is for the June 19 attack on 62-year-old Charles Miller at the Miami Correctional Facility near Peru. The Kokomo Tribune reports that Miami County Prosecutor Bruce Embrey says he expects Brown would kill again if prison officials don’t keep him in a segregated unit.

Embrey says he decided against seeking the death penalty against Brown because of the expense the county would face.
