Wisconsin man to be sentenced in 1973 Arizona murder

TUCSON, Ariz. — A federal judge is scheduled to sentence a Wisconsin man in the 1973 killing of a Tucson woman who was the daughter of an FBI agent.

William Floyd Zamastil of Waupun, Wis., faces up to life in prison for his July conviction for first-degree murder in the death of Leesa Jo Shaner.

Her remains were found in September 1973 in a shallow grave at Fort Huachuca in southeastern Arizona.

Prosecutors believe Shaner was abducted from the Tucson International Airport, where she had driven to pick up her husband on May 29, 1973.

Authorities say they became aware of Zamistil’s involvement in the Shaner case when he was imprisoned for the rape and murder of a Wisconsin woman in 1979.

Thursday’s sentencing will be before U.S. District Court Judge Frank Zapata.
