Wisconsin could move up fall primary

MADISON, Wis. — Wisconsin’s fall primary date would change from September to August under a bill the state Assembly is tentatively scheduled to vote on next week.

The bill would move the primary from the second Tuesday in September to the second Tuesday in August. Next year, the primary would be Aug. 14.

The change is needed in order to comply with federal law to give military and overseas voters enough time to mail their ballots.

The Senate already passed a slightly different version of the bill. If the Assembly bill passes Tuesday, it will have to be approved again by the Senate before it heads to Gov. Scott Walker.

A federal elections official was in Wisconsin last week meeting with lawmakers to convince them to move the primary date.
