Rockford monsignor named Bismarck bishop

BISMARCK, N.D. — Pope Benedict XVI on Wednesday named an official with the Roman Catholic Diocese of Rockford to be the next bishop for the Diocese in Bismarck.

Sixty-one-year-old Monsignor David Kagan will succeed Bishop Paul Zipfel, who’s retiring after reaching the mandatory age of 75 in September 2010. Kagan will be the seventh bishop of the Bismarck diocese.

Kagan is an Illinois native who holds degrees from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. His ordination ceremony in Bismarck is Nov. 30 at Cathedral of the Holy Spirit.

Zipfel has served since being appointed by Pope John Paul II in 1997. Diocese Chancellor Joel Melarvie tells The Bismarck Tribune that Zipfel plans to teach at the University of Mary. The Bismarck school last year named its Catholic Studies program after Zipfel.
