Call Schaumburg baseball team the prairie chickens, a k a Boomers

The general manager for Schaumburg's new professional baseball team announced yesterday the team has been named the Schaumburg Boomers — for the once prominent Illinois animal the prairie chicken. “The nickname ‘boomer' comes from a remarkable dance that the animal does,” said general manager Andy Viano while a video of a prairie chicken played on a projection screen. “It will look like its ears — but it's actually the feathers on its back — stand up, (and) the air sacks on the side of the neck ‘boom' out.” Full story.

21-year-old Carpentersville man charged with attempted murder

A 21-year-old Carpentersville man was charged yesterday in the gang-related shooting of a 19-year-old man who was shot Oct. 13, according to police. Bryson Crenshaw was charged with attempted murder, and two men with him during the shooting were charged with mob action. Police said the shooting was in retaliation to one of the suspects being jumped by a rival gang member. Full story.

Accused ex-Waukegan mayoral hopeful charged in Canadian murder

A former Waukegan mayoral candidate charged with burning down a Waukegan Salvation Army building in May has been charged with murder by Canadian authorities. Gregory D. Flesher is accused of starting an apartment fire in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, two weeks after the Waukegan fire, which killed a 48-year-old woman. Flesher is being held at the Lake County jail in lieu of $2.5 million bail for the Waukegan arson, but Canadian authorities have begun an extradition process. Full story.

Crew busted during attempt to rob Antioch car dealership

Seven Chicago men were arrested after smashing an Antioch car dealership window and stealing car keys during a plan to steal multiple new vehicles, police said yesterday. The crew was arrested a few blocks from the dealership with the keys, while police suspect they were waiting to see if the alarm had sounded. The men, all in their 20s, are being held in lieu of $100,000 bail. Seven law enforcement agencies cooperated in the arrests. Full story.

Owner of animal ‘torture camp' sentenced to 30 months

A Lake County judge ordered Diane Eldrup, the former owner of Muddy Paws Dog Rescue, to 30 months in periodic imprisonment, 10 months after 30 dead dogs were found in the Kildeer shelter. “Why would she rescue them to death?” Judge James Booras asked yesterday before sentencing Eldrup in her animal cruelty case. “It's beyond human comprehension.” The 48-year-old will be housed in a Lake County jail but allowed to leave for work, court appearances, counseling and visits with her son. Quinn reinforces stance against slots at Arlington Park

Gov. Pat Quinn says he will not compromise on his opposition to slot machines at Arlington Park, happy with the state reexamining the amount of money given to the track each year to support horse racing. “To me, that is a much better way to go than to say to each of the racetracks we're going to grant your wish to become a casino,” Quinn said yesterday. The money provided to the track is intended to offset the impact of area casinos. Full story.

Man sentenced to 30 years in 1982 Round Lake murder

Robert Bostic, who was charged 29 years after the fact with killing a man in Round Lake Beach over a whiskey chugging bet, was sentenced yesterday to 30 years in prison. The 71-year-old killed Carlton Richmond in 1982 after Richmond bet him $500 that he could not drink an entire bottle of whiskey in one continuous swallow. He did, Richmond did not pay up and Bostic shot him in the chest. He was arrested in Tennessee early this year when Round Lake Police broke the cold case. Full story.

Senators question public schools' driver education programs

Illinois senators held a policy hearing yesterday questioning the state of driver education in public schools, which can cost up to $700 for classes contrary to state laws. Costs are not supposed to exceed $250, but many districts receive waivers to surpass that. The number of teens enrolled in public school driver education classes has decreased by 40 percent since 1978. “This a serious problem,” Sen. Iris Martinez said. “At the end of the day, it's about students and we want to be sure they get proper drivers education.” Full story.

Hossa returns from injury, starts Hawks' scoring

In his first game back from an upper body injury, Marian Hossa scored the Blackhawks' first goal en route to a 5-2 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes. Hossa, who earlier in the week did not expect to play, fired a slapshot on a 5-3 power play to open the scoring. “I felt the best I felt in the last four days,” Hossa told reporters. “I'm actually surprised. Yesterday, I felt a little worse, but with the extra day of rest there was no issue. Hopefully, I can jump back and play as many games as I can.” Full story.

Traffic

The slight winds and rain are causing chaos on the roadways. The weather is causing huge congestion on most major expressways. Motorists are asked to avoid S. Arlington Heights and Biesterfield roads in Elk Grove Vilage because of a crash, while roadways near Lake Michigan are already starting to floods due to high waves rolling in from the lake. The National Weather Service has issued a Lake Michigan flood warning due to the weather, and announced waves could reach 25 feet by this afternoon. People are still urged to give themselves an extra 10 minutes when heading to work because of the Full traffic.
