Search for Highland Park canoeist suspended

STURGEON BAY, Wis. — The water patrol search has been temporarily suspended for a Highland Park man who disappeared after his canoe capsized in Lake Michigan off the shore of Door County.

The sheriff’s department identified the missing man as 45-year-old Mayur Patel. Patel was in a canoe with another Illinois man Sunday afternoon when it overturned near Washington Island. The other man swam to shore while Patel stayed with the canoe.

Dive team officers and an aircraft searched the area Tuesday but did not find Patel. Water patrol units won’t be searching for the next couple of days because high winds are expected to return, but police will continue searching the shoreline.

The U.S. Coast Guard and local authorities searched Sunday and Monday, but there was no sign of Patel.
