Donation doubles size of Lake Barrington savanna
Citizens for Conservation’s Flint Creek Savanna South property in Lake Barrington is more than doubling in size thanks to a recent donation by the Barrington Bank & Trust.
The bank donated to the organization approximately 11 acres of open space along Northwest Highway, expanding the property from about 8.5 acres to almost 20 acres.
CFC had been trying for several years to acquire the land, formerly known as “Lot 2 of the Boulder Ridge Subdivision.” The organization reached out to the bank after it took possession of the space in 2010 and was able to work out a deal.
“From the very beginning, it was clear that the Bank shared CFC’s mission of protecting natural lands and was committed to giving back to the community,” said CFC land preservation chairman Alberto Moriondo.
The organization will work to rid the donated land of any invasive species and bring it back to its original, natural state, Moriondo said.
According to the Flint Creek Watershed Partnership, the 11 acres are an important groundwater recharge location.
Barrington Bank & Trust CEO Brad Stetson said donating the land to CFC ensures “that the parcel will be restored to its natural condition and preserved in perpetuity.”
