Barrington official remembered for wit, work ethic

Barrington officials were shocked Tuesday to learn of the sudden overnight death of Jim Wallace, the town’s deputy village manager, at age 57.

An official cause of death was not available Tuesday. The Lake County coroner’s office said that there was no violence or trauma involved.

“I saw him and talked to him (Monday),” Village Manager Jeff Lawler said. “He looked as healthy as always. This is a huge shock.”

Village President Karen Darch remembered Wallace as a “wonderful employee.”

“His quick wit and great sense of humor added joy to many a meeting and busy day at village hall,” Darch said. “He was a credit to the village of Barrington, and he will be missed.”

Wallace started working for the village in 1996 as the building and zoning officer. He wore a number of hats before being named the deputy village manager in 2007.

Lawler said that as deputy village manager, Wallace focused on special projects, such as the “process improvement” initiative designed to streamline various village processes. He also served as the village’s emergency management co-coordinator.

“He was very well-liked by the people he worked with but also by the residents,” Lawler said. “He was well-organized and worked very hard — he cared about this community. And he had a great sense of humor.”

Wallace lived near Lake Zurich. Funeral arrangements are pending.

“The village’s thoughts are with Jim’s wife, Connie, and his entire family,” Darch said. “This is a big loss.“
