21-year-old charged in Carpentersville shooting

A 21-year-old Carpentersville man was arrested Tuesday and charged with attempted murder in connection to an Oct. 13 gang-related shooting, according to police.

Police responded to a report of shots fired at the area of Berkshire Circle and Wakefield Drive at 10:30 a.m. Thursday and found a 19-year-old who had been shot in the abdomen.

Two Carpentersville men were arrested that same day after running from the scene and charged with mob action. The shooter, Bryson Crenshaw of the 100 block of Meadowdale Court, was charged Tuesday afternoon, police said.

The victim’s condition was not known Tuesday, but he was alert and able to speak while being treated at Sherman Hospital the day he was shot and expected to survive, said Carpentersville police Cmdr. Timothy Bosshart.

Carpentersville residents 24-year-old Byron Pipes, of the 0-99 block of Wren Road, and 23-year-old Anthony Johnson, of the 100 block of Hazard Road, were with Crenshaw during the shooting and were charged with mob action, according to police.

One of the three suspects was previously jumped by a rival gang and the shooting was retaliatory, according to police.

“There was no real connection between these guys,” Bosshart said. “The three offenders had a grudge against anybody that was a person in the gang the victim was a part of.”

Police said the three suspects were walking in the neighborhood when Crenshaw fired at the victim.

Crenshaw was charged was attempted murder and two counts of aggravated battery with a firearm. He is scheduled to appear in bond court Wednesday morning.

A judge set bail at $75,000 for Pipes and $25,000 for Johnson. Both men are scheduled to appear in court Oct. 26.
