Fall tree colors nearing their peak

With the sudden dip in temperatures we're experiencing, the peak of fall tree color is right around the corner, arborists say.

Warm weather and bright sunshine have kept some trees green longer than usual. But as we're already midway through October, the last traces of chlorophyll should be disappearing rapidly now.

The next couple of weeks should be the perfect time for people to get outside and enjoy the multicolored foliage, officials at the Cook County Forest Preserve District's Crabtree Nature Center near Barrington Hills said.

This is also the prime visiting season at the Morton Arboretum in Lisle. As the arboretum's trees come from all over the world and change colors at very different times and rates, officials there don't claim any one particular part of the autumn as the peak.
