Young males invited to Naperville group’s Boys Power Sing
The Young Naperville Singers’ 10th annual Boys Power Sing invites boys in fourth through eighth grades to a workshop where they can learn about singing in a choir and try playing a bit of percussion.
The Boys Power Sing is Saturday, Oct. 22, at Neuqua Valley High School, 2360 95th St., Naperville. Boys should register for the workshop by Monday, Oct. 17.
The extracurricular program sets out to enrich boys’ choral experience and to encourage greater male participation in community, school and church choirs across Naperville and surrounding areas.
Each year, the workshop continues to grow and draw boys from varying backgrounds. Last year’s sing drew 110 participants, and attendance this year is expected to be more than 150.
In the past, the Boys Power Sing has brought on guest choirs such as The Men’s Chorus from North Central College, the Wheaton College Men’s Glee Club, Naperville Men’s Glee Club, and young men from Naperville North High School.
This year, the Neuqua Valley High School Chorus members will be present, along with headlining clinicians Jay Kellner, founder and music director of the Elgin Children’s Chorus, and Ryan Rimington, a published composer and arranger of several choral works.
Ryan Henry, director of the Young Naperville Singers’ Boys Choir, also will be there to lead the boys in song and percussion instruction on an array of African drums.
“The Boys Power Sing is an exciting event that brings boys together from all across the region to drum and sing,” said Angie Johnson, Young Naperville Singers’ artistic director.
“Over 150 boys and high school male singers will fill the auditorium with songs from around the world and have a fantastic time together. Combine incredible music with engaging and energetic conductors, food and new friends, and you have the makings for an unforgettable experience.”
The Boys Power Sing Workshop is from 9 a.m. to noon, followed immediately by an informal concert for parents.
The cost of the workshop is $5, which includes a pizza lunch. Register by calling the chorus office weekdays before Monday, Oct. 17, at (630) 369-9679.
At the conclusion of the workshop, boys interested in joining the Boys Choir can talk with the director and audition.
Young Naperville Singers is a 28-year-old choral organization that includes six separate, ability-based choirs for children in grades one through 12. With more than 320 singers overall, the program continues to grow each year and to provide a musical education and experience for participants.
