Submitted by Aurora University

Health and wellness will be the focus Wednesday, Oct. 19, when Aurora University hosts a vaccination clinic, family health fair and blood drive on campus.

The AU Wellness Center will host a vaccination clinic by the Visiting Nurse Association from 5 to 7 p.m. at the University Banquet Hall in Alumni Hall, 1410 Marseillaise Place. Flu shots are $20; tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis shots are $45 each; pneumonia shots are $50; and meningitis shots are $80.

Shots will be given on a first-in basis. Reservations are required by calling (630) 844-5434.

A corresponding family health fair will feature AU junior nursing students providing information at a series of stations, including “Keeping Life Sweet,” which will offer sugar-free food tastings for managing diabetes; “Too Smart to Start,” where visitors will be able to try goggles that simulate alcohol intoxication; and “When is a Cellphone a Weapon?” which will detail dangers of texting while driving.

Other booths will provide information on stress management, exercise strategies, flu prevention, nutrition and wellness, community health resources, domestic violence prevention and healthy sleep habits.

Free blood pressure screenings also will be available at the health fair.

Earlier in the day, the AU Student Nurse Association will host a blood drive from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Dunham Hall, 1400 Marseillaise Place. Heartland Blood Centers will conduct the drive with AU student nurses. Each donor will receive a pair of flannel pajama pants.

Donors must be at least 17 years old and weigh 110 pounds. A driver’s license, blood donor card or other photo identification is required. Donors should eat a meal before donating blood.

Reservations are requested. Call (630) 844-7832 for a reservation or more information.
