Organizers say they can’t anticipate turnout for Elgin, Aurora protests

Community activists in Elgin and Aurora are planning protests Saturday in support of the nationwide Occupy Together movement.Saturday is being billed as a #147;global day of action#148; by Occupy Together, an offshoot of the Occupy Wall Street movement started last month in New York City. According to its website, the movement encompasses about 1,700 cities worldwide.The Occupy Aurora protest is planned at 10 a.m. near the Bank of America at 896 N. Route 59. Organizer Cynthia Ralls, of Plano, said she and a few others have been contacting activist organizations, student groups and local unions.The Occupy Together movement is using the social networking website Meetup to spread its message. As of Friday afternoon, the Occupy groups in Elgin and Aurora only had a handful of online members. #147;I think we#146;re going to see a pretty good group. I really do,#148; Ralls said. #147;We anticipate an ongoing event, just like everywhere else. We are just getting started.#148;In Elgin, organizers say they can#146;t gauge the number of attendees. The march is planned at 1 p.m. at the Kimball Street bridge east of State Street.#147;It could be only two of us, it could be more,#148; said organizer Sigi Psimenos, who is spreading the word via #147;Made in Elgin,#148; a Facebook group she created.The protest #147;is to show support for those that are doing it day in and day out in larger metropolitan areas, and to show solidarity for those folks,#148; she said.
