Infant clinging to life after becoming unresponsive at Grayslake day care

A 3-month-old infant is fighting for his life at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge after nearly dying during a nap at a private Grayslake day care facility, police officials said Frida.

Grayslake Interim Police Chief Matt McCutcheon said paramedics from the Grayslake Fire Protection District was summoned to the private day care on the 1400 block of Mayfair Drive on Thursday in response to the male infant unresponsive and not breathing.

The licensed day care worker of the home found the boy face down in the crib during his nap and quickly called 911, McCutcheon said.

Rescue officials arrived on the scene and performed resuscitation efforts at the day care and in the ambulance on the way to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.

“At some point, the infant started breathing again on his own,” McCutcheon said. “From there, the infant was then transferred to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge.”

However, McCutcheon said the infant is still in intensive care and fighting for his life.

The name of the licensed day care worker is being withheld, he said, but there is no indication of foul play or wrong doing on the worker’s part.

The child was sleeping in a crib that did not have baby bumpers, and it’s believed he rolled over onto his stomach at some point when he was sleeping.

It’s unclear how long the baby was not breathing before paramedics were able to get him breathing again, McCutcheon said.

“The Grayslake Rescue Squad worked swiftly to resuscitate the baby, and the day care worker did the right thing and called for help quickly,” he said.
