State seeks disciplinary action against Naperville doctor

A state regulatory board is seeking disciplinary action against a Naperville physician accused of making false or misleading statements, according to a complaint filed this week.

Dr. Anjum Usman has been charged with “unprofessional, unethical and/or dishonorable conduct” by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation for her use of alternative autism treatments.

According to the complaint filed Wednesday, Usman is accused of treating a young boy for autism with a variety of alternative and unconventional medical treatments.

Those treatments resulted in the boy receiving “unnecessary and medically unwarranted treatment” that may potentially result in permanent disfiguring injuries, according to the complaint.

The complaint also alleges Usman made false or misleading statements about the value of the treatments that “demonstrated extreme departure from rational medical judgment” and “abused the patient/physician relationship.”

The complaint asks that Usman’s medical license be revoked or suspended, or that she be placed on probation or otherwise disciplined.

Usman, medical director of the True Health Medical Center, is scheduled to appear Nov. 28 before an administrative law judge for the Illinois State Medical Disciplinary Board to set a hearing date.

Usman can try to reach a disciplinary settlement with the department before the end of her trial.

Attempts to reach Usman and her attorney Thursday were unsuccessful.
