North Aurora man dies after swallowing drugs during arrest

A North Aurora man died Wednesday night after choking on a bag of drugs he swallowed while attempting to flee Chicago Police, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Police officers tried to take 47-year-old Kevin Davis into custody for a narcotics offense at 7:38 p.m. Wednesday on the city's west side, but Davis fled on foot, said Chicago Police Department spokesman Officer Daniel O'Brien.

When police caught Davis, whose last known address is on the 0-99 block of South Grant St., he was coughing and choking, O'Brien said.

An ambulance was immediately called to the scene and Davis was taken to Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 8:28 p.m., according to a medical examiner's office official.

The official cause of death was ruled accidental asphyxiation, or choking, on a “foreign body,” according to the medical examiner's office.

Police said he was choking on a bag of narcotics.
