Rick Perry in town for private fundraisers

Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry will be in Carpentersville today for a fundraising event sponsored by a Barrington businessman a day after he appeared at a North Side home for a fundraiser. Thursday's fundraiser at the Otto Engineering plant is private, “in order to have an open dialogue between Gov. Perry and donors.” Jack Roeser, founder of Otto Engineering, traveled to Texas to talk to the governor about his possible run for office and hopes Perry will help Republicans “reclaim” Illinois. Sheriff office hopes to ID final 8 Gacy victims

More than 30 years after the arrest of serial killer John Wayne Gacy, the question of who the final eight unidentified victims of Gacy's 33 total were could soon be solved. The Cook County sheriff's office, now armed with DNA profiles of those eight, hopes the public will help identify those unknown young men. Anyone with a male family member who went missing between 1970 and 1979 can volunteer for DNA testing in hopes of matching a sample to one of the unknown victims. “We're hoping to close the book once and for all on John Gacy,” Dart said Wednesday. “We are now at the point where we need the public's help.” Full story.

Killer at large while hundreds attend 5-year-old's funeral

About 300 people gathered at the funeral of 5-year-old Eric M. Galarza Jr. yesterday, while his killer remains at large. Galarza was killed in a gang-related shooting while in a vehicle with his family Oct. 7 in Elgin. “His tragic death is unacceptable,” said the Rev. Adalberto Sanchez, who conducted Mass in Spanish at St. Joseph Catholic Church. “If we don't think about how we act, we end up living in a world where the just pay for the sinners — and children are not guilty of anything.” Full story.

Cops: North Chicago man charged with robbing 4 women, including a nun

A North Chicago man has been charged in connection with armed robberies of four women including one Catholic nun. Albert C. Evans was pulled over in Waukegan this weekend when police said they spotted him driving a vehicle that matched the description of the previous robberies. He had an “Air Soft” pistol in his waistband and a glove and mask in the vehicle, police said. Victims told police he wore a mask and gloves while robbing them at gunpoint. Police said he could be involved in other similar crimes. Full story.

Motorola CEO remembered for transforming family company into giant

Robert Galvin, Motorola's CEO for 29 years, died, it was announced yesterday. The Barrington Hills resident, who turned his father's radio company into an international technology giant, died of natural causes at age 89. “Without a doubt, the world lost one of the all-time greats,” Greg Brown, CEO of Motorola Solutions Inc., said in an interview. “He was one of a kind.” Galvin was named CEO in 1959 at the death of his father, Paul Galvin, and moved the company to Schaumburg from Chicago during that time. Police: Suspicious man ran at boy walking home

Schaumburg police are warning the public about a “suspicious person” who ran toward an 11-year-old boy who was on his way home from school Tuesday afternoon. Police have released a sketch of the man, who fled when the boy ran to a nearby residence on the 100 block of North Staffire Drive and rang the doorbell. The man did not make physical contact with the boy, and nothing was said by either party, according to police. Full story.

Turkish officials visit Naperville, study government

A group from Ankara, Turkey, was in Naperville yesterday to learn about the city's city manager form of government as part of Northern Illinois University's Public Management and Leadership Certification Program. “Turkey is now one of the fastest growing countries in the world, besides China,” said NIU adjunct professor Manu Vora. “So they are sending officers out every year to learn new things. They are involved in a continuous learning process.” Full story.

While Cub Nation awaits the official word on Theo Epstein's arrival, and his actual title, Rick Hahn appears to be staying with the White Sox as the assistant GM. Carcillo's debut overshadows return of Byfuglien, Ladd

The Car Bomb is making his first regular appearance on home ice tonight just in time for former Blackhawks Dustin Byfuglien's and Andrew Ladd's return to the United Center. Daniel Carcillo's Hawks debut, after missing the first two games due to a suspension from an incident in last year's playoffs, will put him on the Hawks' second line with Patrick Kane and Marian Hossa to face the Winnipeg Jets. “Danny gets a chance to play with some great players and I think that line can do a lot of things,” Hawks coach Joel Quenneville said yesterday. “It's got a little bit of size and some net-front presence. What was once light congestion has turned into overwhelming traffic congestion due to the light, slick rain. I-90 is slower than normal, while travel times are jumping all over the grid. An accident in Deer Park has shut down westbound Lake Cook Road near Quentin Road, so find alternatives. Also, continue to watch out for construction on Lincoln Avenue between Linder and Main street through Skokie and Morton Grove, while Route 59 and Route 20 is slow in Bartlett. Full traffic.
