Chicago Bears appeal Cook County tax bill

The Chicago Bears say they don’t owe Cook County as much as $5.5 million in back taxes.

The football team filed an appeal Tuesday in Cook County Circuit Court challenging a Sept. 7 judge’s ruling that the Bears owe the amusement taxes plus interest. The judge’s September ruling agrees with Cook County officials who say the Bears have to collect the tax on customers at Soldier Field club seats and luxury suites. Those tickets can include the cost of food, drinks and parking.

Bears lawyers argue that the amusement tax only applies to admission-related fees, not the premium-seat extras. They say the Bears have collected the tax since 2003 but don’t apply the tax to the amenities.

Cook County has been seeking the tax payment since 2007.
