Billings wins Dem primary for Wisconsin special election

LA CROSSE, Wis. — La Crosse County supervisor Jill Billings has won a Democratic primary in the race for the state’s vacant 95th Assembly District seat.

Billings beat three other Democrats in Tuesday’s primary, taking 52 percent of the vote. The next-closest rival was school-board president Christine Clair, who got 32 percent.

A La Crosse Tribune report says Billings will now face Republican David Drewes in the Nov. 8 special election.

They’ve vying for the position vacated in August by Democrat Jennifer Shilling. She stepped down to fill the state Senate seat she won in a recall election against Republican Sen. Dan Kapanke (kuh-PANK’-ee).

The 95th Assembly District covers a corner of La Crosse County. The 49-year-old Billings says the district is largely Democratic, but she won’t take the November election for granted.
