Music notes: Beach Boys surf into Naperville
Still surfin'
The Beach Boys bring their classic American rock 'n' roll to Naperville's North Central College this weekend. The current lineup includes two members from the group's 1960s heyday — Mike Love (vocals) and Bruce Johnston (vocals, keyboards).
8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, and 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 16, at Pfeiffer Hall, 310 E. Benton, Naperville. $75-$95. Go to northcentralcollege.edu.
Jazz-rock fusion
The genre-blurring music of the late Bill Chase will be celebrated when a retooled version of his band, Chase, plays in the suburbs this weekend. The current band, which features several original members, will explore its trumpet-heavy mix of rock and jazz, an approach that won the group a sizable following in the 1970s.
9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14, at the Montrose Room, located inside the InterContinental Chicago O'Hare hotel at 5300 N. River Road, Rosemont. $25, $40. Go to montroseroom.com.
Pearl Jam up close
1991 was a key year for rock 'n' roll, with big releases by Nirvana, U2, Pearl Jam and others helping to reshape the music industry. This year, various 20th anniversary events have celebrated those releases. Pearl Jam, the Seattle band fronted by Chicago-area native Eddie Vedder, gets its due next week with the premiere of “Pearl Jam 20,” an in-depth documentary about the band by filmmaker and former music writer Cameron Crowe. The film will air at 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21, on PBS as part of the “American Masters” program, and a DVD will be released a short time later. The documentary features plenty of never-before-seen performance footage, new interviews with band members and archival interviews with such luminaries as Neil Young and the late Kurt Cobain.
