Author Irving Cutler to present book talk in Buffalo Grove
Author Irving Cutler will discuss and present a slide show of his award-winning book “The Jews of Chicago: From Shtetl to Suburb,” on Wednesday, Nov. 2, at Congregation B'nai Shalom, 701 W Aptakisic Road in Buffalo Grove.
The program will begin at 8 p.m. following services at 7:30 p.m. Refreshments will be served.
Vividly told and richly illustrated with more than 160 photographs, “The Jews of Chicago” is the fascinating story of the cultural, religious, fraternal, economic and everyday life of Chicago's Jews. This edition of Irving Cutler's definitive historical volume also includes a new foreword written by the author.
Irving Cutler of Wilmette is a lifelong Chicago-area resident, author, tour guide and speaker. After serving as a United States Naval Officer in World War II for several years, he went on to receive a master's degree in social science at the University of Chicago and a Ph.D. in geography at Northwestern University. He served on the faculty of Chicago State University for 24 years, 10 years as chairman of the geography department. He has been a consultant to a number of government agencies and has written and cowritten numerous books including the award-winning “The Jews of Chicago: From Shetl to Suburb.”
Cutler has participated in a number of radio and television programs and has given many tours and talks on various aspects of Chicago. He is on the boards of directors of a number of historical and geography societies and has served as a president of the Geographic Society of Chicago.
