Mexican national imprisoned on re-entry charge

EAST ST. LOUIS — An illegal immigrant's return to the U.S. after being deported to Mexico has drawn him a one year and nine month sentence in federal prison.

A federal judge sentenced 33-year-old Fernando Cagal-Toto in East St. Louis after the man pleaded guilty to a charge of unlawful re-entry into the U.S. after deportation.

Authorities say Cagal-Toto was arrested in May in the southern Illinois city of Nashville, having been deported to Mexico in August 2009 as an illegal immigrant.

Cagal-Toto also had been convicted of a felony battery charge in Nashville before being transferred to federal custody to be prosecuted on the illegal re-entry charge.
