• People waking up in Mundelein and seeing a large fireball in the sky shouldn't be concerned. North Shore Gas is performing a natural gas burn off early this morning west of Route 60, and the fireball from the gas is expected to reach heights of five stories tall.
• An adult is facing charges of hosting an underaged drinking party late Saturday night in Geneva, officials said. Four teens were charged with underaged drinking at the party in the 500 block of Eighth Street in Geneva, but officials are pursuing state charges against the adult who held the bash.
Hoffman Estates rejects Dist. 300, urges tax breaks for Sears
The Hoffman Estates village board unanimously passed a resolution last night urging the state to keep Sears in Illinois using "all reasonable efforts," and the village of Schaumburg is expected to make a similar resolution today. Hoffman Estates' move came after Carpentersville-based Community Unit District 300 Superintendent Michael Bregy said he believes village officials are motivated to extend the deal because of the Sears Centre. Arlington Heights gets dire warning on ash trees
Arlington Heights could lose one-third of its parkway trees to the emerald ash borer in the next five to seven years, public works director Scott Shirley told the village board last night. The village has 13,080 ash trees on parkways and 36,192 total parkway trees. While the Illinois Department of Agriculture says some treatments could be 80 percent effective, Shirley was skeptical. Multimillion-dollar Des Plaines development facing possible foreclosure
A major piece of Des Plaines' downtown redevelopment, Metropolitan Square, repeatedly defaulted on a $17.6 million bank loan and now could face foreclosure. The city spent $20.8 million toward the $90 million mixed-use development near Northwest Highway and Lee Street, which opened in 2006. Man charged with DUI in crash that killed Naperville motorcyclist
A Shorewood man has been charged with aggravated driving under the influence after a weekend crash that killed a Naperville motorcyclist. David C. Dietrich, 32, was driving an uninsured truck when he lost control Saturday afternoon on Route 59 in Plainfield, crossed the center median and struck the motorcyclist. Dietrich was injured in the crash, but was charged upon his release from the hospital. Elk Grove Village police officer injured while on motorcycle
An on-duty Elk Grove Village police officer was injured in a motorcycle accident last night. Police from Schaumburg and Elk Grove Village were at the scene about three-quarters of a mile south of Schaumburg Road on Martingale Road investigating. It is not clear what caused the crash, but the officer was taken to Alexian Brothers Medical Center in an unknown condition. Elgin mayor: Somebody knows who killed 5-year-old
The family of a 5-year-old boy who was killed in a gang-related shooting Friday night has finalized his funeral arrangements, while the crime remains unsolved. Thousands march in downtown Chicago as protests spread
Thousands of protesters marched through downtown Chicago Monday from five separate locations and finally converged at the Art Institute on Michigan Avenue, where a financial futures trading industry reception was taking place. Man tells officer he works for attorney general during traffic stop
A Wilmette man who tried to get out of a traffic stop in Lincolnshire by claiming he was an assistant at the state's attorney general's office was caught in his lie, police said yesterday. David J. Police: 18-year-old tells friend he is going to break in, actually breaks in
A West Dundee man who texted his friend the message, #8220;I'm going to break into your house, ha ha,#8221; did just that and now faces felony residential burglary and misdemeanor trespassing to a vehicle charges, police said yesterday. Jonathan Hansen, 18, sneaked into the Palatine home through a window above the garage and once inside took a 2010 Audi for a joy ride, played his friend's Xbox and ate the family's food, police said. Traffic
Backups are being reported everywhere, with the worst being the Jane Addams Tollway at Lee Street where an accident has caused three outbound lanes to be shut down, causing the expressway t back up tremendously. There is also an accident in Pingree Grove at US 20 and Reinking Road, and on eastbound Reagan Tollway near Route 59 that forced the closure of two lanes. Construction is still slowing things down at routes 59 and 20 in Bartlett. Full traffic.
Lions pound Bears, playoff hopes in jeopardy early
The Detroit Lions continued their winning ways during last night's prime time game, mauling the Bears 24-13 in Detroit. The loss puts the Bears at 2-3 and in bad shape in the newly dominant NFC North, which features two undefeated teams in the Lions and Green Bay Packers. NBA commissioner cancels first 2 weeks of the season
The NBA has canceled the first two weeks of the regular season as owners and players remain at a stalemate on a new labor deal. Commissioner David Stern said both sides are #8220;very far apart on virtually all issues. ...
