Final hearing on oil pipeline to be raucous show

WASHINGTON — Environmental activists, religious groups and young people inspired by the protests against Wall Street plan to rally in opposition to a Canadian company’s plan to pipe oil from tar sands in western Canada to the Texas Gulf Coast.

They will be countered by leaders from business and labor, and the oil company CEO, who will stress benefits of the $7 billion project and the thousands of jobs it will create.

All that is set to happen before the State Department holds its final hearing Friday on the proposed Keystone XL oil pipeline. More news conferences are scheduled afterward, the final chance for supporters and opponents to influence the Obama administration.

The 1,700-mile pipeline would travel through Montana, South Dakota, Kansas, Nebraska and Oklahoma. A decision is expected in December.
