Obama, Robinson should bone up on math
The Sept. 23 Daily Herald Opinion Page had an article by Eugene Robinson ending with “And we heard Obama’s retort: ‘This is not class warfare. It’s math.’”
Well, let’s examine the math about the “rich” not paying their fair share. A large corporation pays a 35-percent tax on its profits. A shareholder receives dividends out of the remaining profits. The shareholder then pays a 15-percent tax on his dividends.
So it seems to me that the “math” would indicate that the shareholder is being taxed a total of 35 percent plus 15 percent equaling 50 percent on his dividends.
Perhaps Mr. Robinson and the president need to consider the “math” more closely before making the half-true statements.
